Students with summer birthdays may not yet be ready for a structured class setting. We encourage parents of children turning 3 after May 1 to thoughtfully consider your child's readiness for school. Please see the helpful guide below!
Is My 3 Year-Old Ready for School?
Wee 3's is ideal for the 3 year-old who...
does well when separated from their caregiver
enjoys group play with other children
respects adults in authority
already attends structured activities run by other adults, like Sunday School, Awana, dance or soccer
speaks clearly
is able to go up and down stairs
can sit and listen to a 3-5 minute story read to them
uses the potty 100% independently, including wiping a bowel movement
tells a grownup what they need verbally
follows simple 1-step directions
participates in family chores, like picking up toys
engages in self-directed play
Signs that a child MAY NOT YET BE READY for the classroom at age 3:
little or no experience being separated from their caregiver
new situations prompt fear or anxiety
speech isn't understood by non-family members
watches other children play but refuses to join them
can't sit for more than 1 minute
needs help wiping or has frequent potty accidents
displays a pattern of disobedience (says "no" to parent)
is not asked to pick up toys or do other family chores
needs a parent or sibling to help them play
TURNS 3 AFTER MAY 1: this is especially true for boys, as they tend to mature at a slower rate
Should My Child Wait a Year?
We recommend that students demonstrating signs of natural unreadiness wait until they are 4 to try the Wee 3's class. Pushing a child to attend school when they are not yet ready is more harmful than helpful; such students require one-on-one supervision, which we cannot provide.
A better option would be having your child attend a weekly activity away from caregivers, such as Sunday School or Awana.
